About the Author

Motivated by cats and coffee, epic fantasy author James Malcolm Elrick lives in Ottawa, Canada (home of the Senators hockey team) with his wife and two daughters. When he’s not being asked on the street if he knows he looks like Anderson Cooper (answer: he is aware), the author is noodling on the guitar, trying to follow Keto, dreaming of running another half-marathon, watching his youngest daughter play Zelda Breath of the Wild, and holding down a full-time job (those crazy bills still need to be paid). And yes, the author can attest, Ottawa is the coldest capital city in the world.

The author’s favorite:

  1. Harry Potter book is The Deathly Hallows (which the author re-read over Christmas 2018)
  2. Harry Potter movie is The Prisoner of Azkaban
  3. Game of Thrones character is Tyrion (the author has read all the books and thoroughly enjoys the show)
  4. Lord of the Rings movie is the extended version of The Fellowship of the Ring
  5. Comic book series is Elektra, written by Frank Miller and illustrated by Bill Sienkiewicz
  6. Manga is Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood (the anime is incredible as well)
  7. Anime is One Punch Man
  8. Vampire hunter is Buffy

The author wrote The Sorceress and the Norns trilogy as a tribute to the fantasy adventure stories and comics he enjoyed so much growing up.

As a kid, the author was a serious bookworm, like serious serious. On weekends, he would spend all day reading for example his favorite book by Piers Anthony, Robert E. Howard, Michael Moorcock, or Tolkien; or his favorite graphic novel by Chris Claremont and John Byrne (X-Men), Frank Miller (The Dark Knight Returns, Ronin, Daredevil, Elektra: Assassin), or Walter Simonson (Thor).

And, as a teenager, epic fantasy figured large as Dungeons & Dragons was popular with nerds. (The author still has his Players Handbook and Monster Manuel.)

As the author grew, he put aside his books and comics, and focused on keeping a roof over his family, putting bread and butter on the table, and paying off the mortgage. (Visit his LinkedIn page for more information about the author’s adventures in high tech in Ottawa.)

Then, one day, much to the author’s surprise, he discovered he had a story he wanted to tell, a story based in the fantasy world of Norse mythology, a story that takes place years after Asgard has fallen, the author began to write.

And when one of the author’s daughters told him to include a strong female character in his epic fantasy trilogy, the author did as he was told as his daughters are wise beyond their years. And then he took the advice further, and included several strong female characters throughout all three stories.

So turn off Netflix and read The Sorceress and the Norns trilogy. Books include:

  1. The Abomination of Asgard
  2. The Prophecy of Asgard
  3. The Reckoning of Asgard

The author earned an Honours Bachelor of Arts in 1991 from Western University (London, Ontario), and a Bachelor of Education in 1994 from Queen’s University (Kingston, Ontario).
